What is a freestanding birth center?

A freestanding birth center is a facility specializing in pregnancy, birth, and post birth care that operates independent from affiliation with a hospital.

A natural birth center is a facility specializing in natural birth, yet offers the comfort and relaxed environment of one’s very own home. Over 90% of healthy women can choose to have a natural birth.  In the same manner, if any medical complication arises during the birth process the couple, extended family, and midwife together have the freedom to make a shared, informed decision as how to proceed.

Why choose midwives?

The World health Organization says: “Midwives are the most appropriate primary health care provider to be assigned to the care of normal birth. “Midwives are experts in normal pregnancy, birth and post birth care, and offer personalized care based in the belief that pregnancy and childbirth are normal, healthy aspects of life. Your midwife strives to help you and your family learn to trust and believe in pregnancy and the birth process.

What about pain relief?

Midwives are well acquainted with a wide array of techniques to manage pain in labor. Your midwives and birth team will help you discover effective pain-relief without the use of drugs. Freedom of movement, eating and drinking in labor, hands-on support, use of water, and the presence of a skilled professional well-acquainted with normal birth all enhance women’s ability to cope in labor without the risks associated with medical pain relief.

What if I need to transfer to the hospital?

Transferring from the birth center to the hospital sometimes happens, either by choice or necessity. Mamas Birth Center is located only 15 minutes from SoonChunHyang University hospital and in the rare case of emergency, transfer by hospital ambulance is possible. To ensure such a transfer is as expedient as possible, we ask that birthing moms finish the registration paperwork process well before the birth by receiving their prenatal care at SoonChunHyang University Hospital. We ask all of our clients to pre-register at the hospital of their choice prior to the birth in the event of a transfer.

How do you compare to world recommendations?

Is it safe?

Numerous studies have shown that a planned birth center or home birth is as safe as a hospital birth for low-risk women. Women giving birth in these settings experience lower rates of intervention in birth, including lower usage of drugs for pain relief, fewer pitocin inductions and lower rates of induction overall, lower rates of episiotomy, fewer operative births, and lower cesarean section rates without compromising the safety of their births.

What if need medical care?

Need for medical care in a healthy, low-risk pregnant woman is uncommon. In the rare instance that a pregnant woman requires care that falls outside the midwives area of expertise, she is referred to the appropriate practitioner. Midwives who practice in home and birth center settings are trained to recognize and resolve complications in pregnancy or birth and have clear guidelines and boundaries for who is appropriate for care.

What if I need medical treatment?  Is it possible to transfer to a hospital?

In most births, the risk of needing an emergency hospital transfer is very low.  However, if the needs of a pregnant mother fall outside of the expertise of our midwives and facility we will promptly prepare your transfer to SoonChunHyang University Hospital.  Our midwives are professionally trained and experienced in recognizing birthing complications, and operate under clear guidelines of when medical intervention is necessary.

When is it normal for Mom and baby to leave Mama’s Birth Center together?

Depending on Mom and baby’s health after the birth, discharge time can vary.  Mama’s Birth Center recommends all Moms to rest one night before heading home, however if Mom and baby are both healthy it is possible to leave as soon as six to twelve hours after birth.

Will my insurance cover Mama’s Birth Center’s services?

Korean National Medical Insurance will cover the expenses of the birth.  However, the room charges are paid by the client.

If a client has private insurance, Mama’s Birth Center can provide the necessary documentation required by the insurance provider in order to cover all expenses.

In the case of private insurance holders, it is our experience that almost all private insurance companies will cover our services if provided with the appropriate paperwork.  Although we can work with you to determine if your insurance company covers our services, clients must be aware that it is the final decision of each individual insurance company and Mama’s Birth Center can offer no guarantee of coverage from your private insurance.

Do you offer any financing terms?

If Mom would like to pay by credit, all certified Korean credit cards have the feature of splitting payment over a number of months – 3 month financing is the most common however, depending on the card, more extended financing may be possible.

Unfortunately, Mama’s Birth Center does not accept financing through cash payments.
